Destiny ships $500 million, highest-selling digital console release

Activision announced this morning it has shipped over $500 million worth of MMO-shooter Destiny into "retail stores and first parties worldwide" as of day one. The number is a little messy to extrapolate because it mushes up the "shipped" dollar figure we try to avoid reporting when possible, with the nutritious digitally distributed "sold" number.

The takeaway here: Destiny is on track to be another billion-dollar franchise for Activision Blizzard. The publisher is swimming in cash and has an enviable portfolio that includes World of Warcraft, Call of Duty and Skylanders. The company also has a quieter monster hit in Hearthstone, which we know has continued to increase "revenue and engagement," but the company has yet to give any specific data on how successful it is beyond noting it "brought in millions of new accounts on Battle.net."
Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg discussed the company's strategy for Destiny with us at Gamescom, saying, "I think entertainment is an incredibly ephemeral thing to build a business on, yet you can look at things and ask a few tough questions. You can ask, 'Do we have a breakthrough idea? Do we have something transformational?' Look at Skylanders and you can say yes. 'Do we have a reason to believe we can make this game better than anyone else?' You look at Bungie [with Destiny] and we like our chances there."

(Nasdaq: ATVI), announced today that the company sold more than $500 million of Destiny into retail stores and first parties worldwide as of day one, making the game the biggest new video game franchise launch in history.

Destiny launched at over 11,000 midnight openings around the world, as fans in over 178 countries (Source: Radian6) shared their fervour on YouTube and in social media.
